This decline comes despite the company reporting record revenues, profits and margins, highlighting the growth Investor Concerns about the sustainability of the AI-driven memory boom.

This decline surprised many investors given Micron’s strength financial performance. However, the sell-off reflects concerns about future memory chip supply growth, valuation risks, profit-taking after an unusual rally, and broader weakness across the semiconductor sector.

The downturn began shortly after Micron reported exceptional financial results for the third quarter of 2026.

The company reported record quarterly revenue of $41.46 billion, up 346% year over year, while adjusted earnings per share came in at $25.11, well above Wall Street estimates. Gross margins rose to nearly 85%, and management expected fiscal fourth-quarter revenue to be approximately $50 billion.

Why did Micron stock fall?

Despite the strong results, Micron faced heavy profit-taking after a rally that saw the stock rise more than 700% over the past year on booming demand for AI memory. After the earnings-driven rally, many investors chose to lock in gains, accelerating the sell-off.

Another major concern is the cyclical nature of the memory industry. In this line, Micron benefited from shortages in HBM, DRAM and NAND chips used in AI infrastructure, pushing prices and margins to record levels.

However, investors fear that the industry may be approaching the peak of the cycle. Historically, strong profitability attracts new capacity, which ultimately leads to oversupply, low prices, and weak margins.

As a result, the market is wondering whether Micron’s current earnings strength can be maintained over the long term.

Meanwhile, concerns about future supply have grown as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix step up investments to expand memory production capacity.

Their bold spending plans have fueled expectations that the current shortage could ease in the coming years. Meanwhile, Chinese memory maker CXMT is emerging as a competitive threat, with some customers reportedly exploring alternative suppliers, raising concerns about Micron’s future pricing power.

The selling also coincided with broader weakness Semiconductors And stocks related to artificial intelligence. Investors are increasingly examining AI infrastructure spending and questioning whether hyperscalers can generate sufficient returns from massive investments in data centers.

Concerns about slowing growth in AI spending and custom chip development by major technology companies have weighed on sentiment toward AI hardware stocks.

Despite the correction, investors remain wary of assigning premium valuations to earnings they consider cyclical.

After rising more than 700% over the past year, even modest concerns about future profitability have led to a sharp revaluation of the stock.

Micron stock forecast

On the other hand, Micron’s near-term outlook remains strong. The company has secured long-term supply agreements backed by billions of dollars in customer commitments while continuing to invest in advanced memory technologies and new U.S. manufacturing facilities.

Management expects memory market conditions to remain tight until at least 2027, with only gradual improvements in supply after that.
