A Wells Fargo customer in Texas says the bank refused to reimburse her after scammers drained $3,300 from her account through the payment platform Zelle.
Ashley Reinhart says she received a call on April 1 from a number that appeared on her caller ID as Wells Fargo, Reports Fox 26 Houston.
She says the caller claimed to work in Wells Fargo’s fraud department and told her her account had been hacked.
The caller then allegedly asked Reinhart to enter a series of numbers that apparently gave the scammers access to her Zelle account. A total of $3,300 was seized in two separate operations, according to the report.
Reinhart says she realized the call was fraudulent after spending more than an hour on the phone. She then went to a Wells Fargo branch to report the scam and also filed a report with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Fox 26 says Wells Fargo denied her claim three times, telling her it allowed someone to access her Zelle account.
The station also received a statement from Zelle spokesman Eric Blankenbacker, who said scams often start via social media, online marketplaces, text messages and prank phone calls.
Fox 26 says Wells Fargo has previously invalidated some dismissed fraud claims, but the bank stands firm when customers follow scammers’ instructions and withdraw or send money themselves.
