A bank customer in South Florida suffered significant losses after falling foul of a complex impersonation scam involving fake bank representatives.
The victim, Randall Khan, says individuals posing as Wells Fargo employees contacted him and provided genuine-looking details to persuade him to withdraw large amounts of cash from multiple branches over several days. Reports NBC Miami.
The instructions included having the rideshare driver pick up cash to deposit the money into a secure account.
Khan says he followed instructions, withdrawing a total of $251,300 from nine branches over seven days.
“The truth for me is that this is all I’ve worked on for the last 25 years of my life. To support my family and my grandson.”
The bank denied the reimbursement claims, stating that proper business account policies were followed and that large personal withdrawals from verified customers were common.
Authorities recommend reporting such incidents to local police, the FBI, and the Federal Trade Commission.
