traffic lights Reports:
President Donald Trump told Hill leaders on Friday, the 60th day of the Iran War, that U.S. hostilities with Tehran have ended — for now — and therefore do not need congressional authorization.
There is some confusion about what the War Powers Act is as it states that the president needs to obtain authorization from Congress for a war longer than 60 days, which is what it is today.
Several Republican senators warned that if the conflict continued beyond today, Congress would have to authorize it. While Trump asserts that the war is over and that the clock will begin again, members of his party do not seem to accept this. It would also create a precedent that could ultimately remove Congress’s authority to authorize (or stop) wars.
It’s Friday, so there’s the usual worry about the war resuming on the weekend. It is very difficult to predict what Trump will do, and I highly doubt he will let some Congressional barking stop him. What could prevent it instead are falling support numbers that would put many members of Congress in serious jeopardy in the midterms if gas prices stay the same.
