Hong Kong has expanded retail access to digital assets by launching XRP trading for ordinary investors on OSL HK. The move makes OSL, the first Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) licensed exchange in the city to allow ordinary people to buy and sell XRP, all within a regulated framework. So far, only professional investors can access XRP trading on OSL, after support for this pool begins in December 2025.
It is another step in Hong Kong’s ongoing efforts to brand itself as a regulated, cryptocurrency-friendly financial centre. Since the city launched its virtual asset licensing system in 2023, retail investors have slowly been able to access more cryptocurrencies. With XRP joining Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana on approved platforms, this new addition highlights the growing push toward regulated digital assets and increased institutional participation.
OSL has become the first licensed exchange in Hong Kong to offer retail XRP trading
OSL HK launched retail XRP trading on July 29officially became the first SFC-licensed exchange in Hong Kong to open the service to the public. Flash Trade is now available with XRP/USD, and the exchange offers over-the-counter (OTC) trading in both XRP/USD and XRP/HKD. Customers can make deposits and withdrawals directly on the XRP ledger network.
Previously, only professional investors could trade XRP On OSL. By dropping this restriction, the platform now welcomes retail users and operates fully under Hong Kong’s regulatory regime.
OSL Group, which is publicly traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the ticker 863, holds SFC licenses in the Type 1, Type 4, Type 7 and Type 9 categories. The company first obtained Type 1 and Type 7 licenses in December 2020, making it the first virtual asset trading platform licensed in Hong Kong. It received approval to serve retail investors in August 2023, around the same time that HashKey obtained a similar license.
This launch also stands out due to XRP’s long regulatory journey. Ripple has spent years wrestling with the US Securities and Exchange Commission over whether XRP is an unregistered security. The legal battle is now over. Hong Kong’s decision to approve retail trading of XRP on a licensed platform shows the regulator’s willingness to allow the asset into a supervised market. However, regulatory approval does not guarantee anything about the next direction of the XRP price. Following this announcement, the price of XRP rose approximately 2.9% to $1.07 over the past 24 hours according to Queen Gekko.
Hong Kong expands regulated cryptocurrency market as institutional interest continues
Hong Kong will launch its own licensing system for virtual asset trading platforms in 2023 as part of a larger plan to build a regulated digital assets market. Since then, the number of cryptocurrencies open to retail investors on these platforms has continued to grow. XRP now joins a relatively small group of digital assets approved for retail, along with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solanaand a bunch of others.
For retail investors, using a licensed platform means access to regulated trading backed by custody protection, anti-money laundering checks, and close SFC oversight. The move also adds some competition, as OSL becomes the first in Hong Kong to launch retail XRP trading.
Meanwhile, institutional interest in blockchain infrastructure continues to grow in Asia. Japan SBI Holdings recently It has been rebranded SBI Security Solutions as a digital practice of SBI, aims to advance its blockchain strategy. The renamed subsidiary will now focus on building the financial infrastructure for institutions on the Canton Network, with a focus on supporting implementation, compliance and cross-border transaction systems.
SBI already acts as a super validator on the Canton Network and says this expansion fits well with the Ripple and XRP Ledger businesses. SBI Ripple Asia is not slowing down, both by continuing its work in payment and tokenization services using Ripple and XRP Ledger technology.
Beyond its trading role, XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, an open-source decentralized blockchain designed for global payments and asset exchanges. Transactions are settled within 3 to 5 seconds, due to the consensus protocol that bypasses mining entirely. The network can process up to 1,500 transactions per second, with XRP itself acting as a bridge for cross-border payments and a source of liquidity between different fiat currencies.
