Clare Co-Operative Mart held its weekly cattle trade in Ennis on Thursday (June 2), with 440 head of cattle passing through the ring with numbers rising in the past week.
According to the sale report from the market place, there was a “good scale” with a “large yard of advanced cattle on offer”.
Quality seen through prices. Prices for front bulls rose by €120 a head in the past week, with these cattle described as “excellent” and “ultra-premium”.
Two Limousin cross bulls weighing an average of 720kg each fetch €3,080 or €4.27 per kilogram.
Two other Limousin bulls, each weighing 765kg, achieved an average of €3,210 per head or €4.19 per kg.
The price of a lighter 680 kg Limousin bull is €3,290 or €4.83 per kilogram.
Here are some sample bull prices from the sale:
- A pen of six Charolais cross bulls weighing an average of 550kg each were priced at €2,470/head or €4.41/kg;
- A Hereford cross bull weighing 650kg made €2,590 or €3.98;
- A pen of four Charolais cross bulls weighing an average of 498kg each were priced at €2,530/head or €5.07/kg;
- Two Angus bulls weighing an average of 450kg each, fetching €2,340 per head or €5.20 per kilogram each;
- An Angus cross bull weighing 580kg achieved €2,550, or €4.39 per kilogram.
A small number of bulls, some for breeding purposes, were also sold on the day for an average of around €4.19 per kilogram.
Heifers also saw strong trade with quality bonus.
A 390kg cross limousine wheel achieved €2,350 or €6.02 per kilogram.
This trend of light one-year cattle yielding good returns has been seen in Mart all over the country.
A selection of the prices paid for calves on the day can be found below:
- A 640kg cross limousine wheel achieved €2,600 or €4.06 per kilogram;
- A Hereford cross heifer weighing 545kg made €2,240 or €4.11 per kg;
- A shorthorn cow weighing 645kg was priced at €2,350 or €3.64 per kilogram;
- A pen of four Charolais cows weighing an average of 432kg each realized €1,990 per head or €4.60 per kilogram.
The sale featured mostly culled continental cows which were also described as excellent.
They have been met with brisk trade with demand from growers at ringside and online clearly evident in the prices achieved.
The 590kg Limousin cow realized €2,530 or €4.28 per kilogram.
Culled Friesian cows saw a much lower price, with a 635kg Friesian cow fetching €1,870 or €2.94/kg, while another 595kg Friesian cow fetched €1,830 or €3.08/kg.
