Google has agreed to pay tens of millions of dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit, alleging that the tech giant recorded user conversations without consent.
According to the settlement official outletGoogle has agreed to pay $68 million to settle a lawsuit brought over accusations that Google Assistant wrongly collected, used and disclosed audio recordings, even though the user had not activated the app.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, Allegedly Devices that support Google Assistant experience “false acceptance,” or instances where the device automatically starts recording conversations even though the user has not used a “hot word,” such as “Okay Google.”
People who purchased a Google-made device, used Google Assistant, or were a household member of Google Assistant users in the United States or its territories between May 18, 2016 and March 19, 2026, are members of the class.
The $68 million settlement fund will be used to pay notice and administration costs, escrow fees, taxes, attorneys’ fees, gratuity for service to the plaintiffs and other costs. The remaining funds will be distributed proportionately to class members based on the total number of points.
Those who purchased Google-made devices will receive four points for each device, up to a maximum of three devices. Meanwhile, those who have used Google Assistant or are a family member of a Google Assistant user will receive one point.
Affected users can file a claim through this outlet On or before August 27.
Google denies all claims and any fault or liability.
“The court did not decide in favor of the plaintiffs or Google. Instead, both sides agreed to settle. In this way, both sides avoid the costs and risks of trial, and members of the settlement class will receive the benefits described in this notice, when they might otherwise receive nothing. The proposed settlement does not mean that any law was violated or that Google did anything wrong.”
