A Michigan man lost $37,000 after being scammed by scammers posing as tech support and a bank representative.
Stephen Cook of Plymouth says the scam started on March 20, when a pop-up warning appeared on his laptop claiming his system had been hacked. Reports NBC affiliate WDIV Local 4.
One caller who identified herself as Veronica J. Wilson claimed his identity was linked to criminal activity and pressured him to act quickly.
At this point, another person joined the call, claiming to be from JPMorgan Chase and named Richard Lee.
The impersonator told Cook that money had been withdrawn from his accounts and instructed him to retrieve the money by withdrawing cash and depositing it into a bitcoin ATM.
Despite growing doubts, Cook eventually deposited $37,000.
The scam was uncovered only after the scammers forced him to withdraw additional money, prompting him to contact the real bank.
Cook reported the incident to authorities, including the FBI.
