  • The wallet extends beyond digital assets to include enterprise financial infrastructure.
  • The acquisition strengthens Circle’s long-term technology strategy for payments and tokenization.
  • The deal highlights the growing strategic value of intellectual property in digital finance.

Acquired by Circle Internet Group Nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM, becoming the largest U.S. holder of blockchain intellectual property as the stablecoin issuer expands its technology stack beyond digital payments and into enterprise financial infrastructure.

The deal covers more than 680 patent families spanning blockchain, banking, insurance, enterprise systems, supply chain verification and cloud security, providing Circle with one of the largest intellectual property portfolios in the industry as competition around tokenized financial services intensifies.

The patent portfolio extends beyond Blockchain

Rather than focusing solely on distributed ledger technology, the acquired portfolio includes technologies developed for large-scale enterprise applications over many years of IBM research.

The patents cover multiple industries, including financial services, banking infrastructure, insurance platforms, secure cloud computing and supply chain verification systems, reflecting IBM’s long-term investment in enterprise blockchain solutions.

The acquisition significantly expands Circle’s ownership of underlying blockchain technologies at a time when financial institutions are accelerating investment in tokenized assets, digital payments, and programmable money.

Support the next phase of the Circle platform

Circle said the intellectual property will promote multiple products across its ecosystem rather than supporting a single initiative.

The company plans to merge Technology to USDCand the EURC, Arc Layer-1 blockchain and Circle Payments network, with supporting infrastructure designed for AI-powered financial applications.

According to Circle, the patents will help secure the technology used for digital payments, token assets, programmable wallets, and machine-to-machine financial interactions as autonomous software agents become increasingly able to execute transactions autonomously.

Enterprise infrastructure becomes a competitive advantage

The acquisition also strengthens Circle’s position among financial institutions evaluating blockchain infrastructure.

Many of IBM’s patents are developed for enterprise environments that require a high degree of security, compliance, and operational flexibility – areas that remain central to institutional adoption of tokenized financial products.

Owning these technologies can reduce licensing uncertainty while providing Circle with additional flexibility as banks and payment providers expand tokenization initiatives.

The two companies also said they intend to explore broader business cooperation after the deal.

Intellectual property is gaining strategic importance

As tokenization moves into traditional finance, patent ownership becomes increasingly valuable alongside network adoption and regulatory compliance.

Large intellectual property portfolios can help companies defend core technologies, negotiate commercial partnerships, and potentially generate future licensing revenue. Unlike organizations participating in defense patent alliances, Circle has not indicated that the newly acquired portfolio will be limited exclusively to defense use.

This leaves the company with broader strategic options as competition increases across stablecoins, tokenized assets and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The circle is expanding beyond stablecoins

The IBM acquisition reflects Circle’s broader ambition to position itself as a financial infrastructure provider rather than just a stablecoin issuer.

By combining one of the largest blockchain patent portfolios in the industry with an AI-focused payments network, tokenization initiatives, and financial instruments, The circle is building A technology enterprise aiming to support the next generation of digital financial services, where enterprise software, programmable money and token assets increasingly converge.
