A new documentary shows that Bitcoin belongs on the boards of professional basketball — and has the access to back them.
Bitcoin Season follows, directed by Mike Nicol Swan Bitcoina Bitcoin wealth services company, is on a mission to create Bitcoin-only partnerships within the professional basketball industry. The film focuses on Swann’s groundbreaking deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers — described as the first Bitcoin-only partnership with an NBA franchise — and a separate agreement with Klutch Sports Group, the player agency founded by Rich Paul that represents some of the biggest names in the sport.
The film depicts Bitcoin not as a financial product, but rather as a tool to empower players, arriving at a moment in which athletes are increasingly asserting control over their careers, brands, and finances.
Matthew Dellavedova, the former NBA guard who appears in the film, described it as a “scheme” for franchises, leagues and athletes looking to move what they represent beyond the balance sheet.
“(Bitcoin Season) shows franchises, leagues and athletes that Bitcoin can transform more than just the balance sheet, it can transform what it represents and the legacy it leaves. We are in an era of player empowerment, and owning Bitcoin is part of that,” Dellavedova said.
Includes expert voices in the film Michael SaylorLynn Alden, Adam Back, Max Kyser, Pierre Rochard, Greg Voss and Nathalie Brunelle, along with executives from the Cavs and Klutch.
The film’s main argument is: As old financial models erode in the digital age, storing value in Bitcoin represents a winning strategy for athletes and institutions alike.
Nicol is no stranger to basketball documentaries. His 2017 film “At Any Cost” was acquired by Netflix and earned comparisons to Hoop Dreams from the Los Angeles Times. Its follow-up, Spoils: Selling the Future of USA Basketball, premiered at the NBA Summer League Film Festival in June 2024 to praise from director Ken Burns. It is now available on Amazon Prime.
Bitcoin Season premiered on June 3, 2026, in San Clemente, California, hosted by Swan founder and CEO Corey Klipsten. A sneak peek at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is scheduled for July 18.
