An Oklahoma family is unable to access $50,000 after a cashier’s check they sent via USPS disappeared before it reached its intended recipient.
The check was sent but never arrived, leaving the funds tied up while navigating the USPS process, says Jimmy Oakes. Reports Oklahoma News 4.
She says the family is looking to use the money to buy a new home after recently moving to Texas.
“My husband’s grandmother passed away several years ago, and she had 80 acres in Minco, and obviously it was left to my father-in-law, and he decided he wanted to sell it and just split the money.”
Tracking data shows the check was scheduled to be delivered on Monday, June 15.
“Monday came and went. We didn’t get anything. So, we went to the local post office here in Orange Grove, Texas, and I talked to the lady there, and she did a tracking number lookup.”
According to the postal employee and tracking data, the last known location of the check was at a distribution center in Oklahoma City.
“They can stop the payment, but it’s basically just cash sitting there. They said if they reissue a new check, my in-laws will be on the hook for the next seven years if someone else tries to cash the first check that was just there.”
The tracking was last updated about 30 days ago, and the Oaks family has been completing missing mail reports and contacting customer service in an attempt to locate the check. Oakes says the process was “frustrating.”
USPS says it is still searching for the missing check. Becky Hernandez of USPS says,
“Providing efficient, reliable, and affordable service is of the utmost importance to the USPS, and we strive to provide exceptional service with every delivery. Unfortunately, in rare cases, an item may not successfully arrive at its destination. In this specific case, the local postal department is aware of the issue, and we are continuing to search and do our best to locate the piece of mail. Postal officials will continue to communicate directly with the customer to provide further updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and remain committed to resolving the issue.”
