Mart Report: Cow, bull and heifer prices at Tuam Mart


Tuam Co-operative Livestock Market in Co. Galway hosted its weekly public livestock auction on Monday 30 March.

talking to Agriland After the sale, market manager Marion Devane provided a sample of the prices paid in the cow, bull and heifer categories.

She said a 710kg Angus cow achieved €2,700, or €3.80 per kilogram, while a lighter, 680kg Limousin cow achieved €2,360, or €3.47 per kilogram.

Another Friesian cow, weighing 615kg, sold for €1,740 or €2.83/kg, and the heavier Simmental cow, 855kg, sold for €3,040 or €3.56/kg.

At the bull auction that day, a 570kg Hereford bull sold for €2,200, or €3.86 per kilogram. Another Limousin cow, weighing 490kg, sold for €2,220, or €4.53 per kilogram.

One of the highest prices per kilo It was noted at the bull sale that day that the price was €5.06 per kilogram, and a 470kg Charolais bull that sold for €2,380 was paid for.

€5.05/kg was paid for another 475kg Charolais bull which achieved €2,400.

Other bull prices:

  • Two Hereford bulls weighing 508kg sold for €2,000 or €3.98 per kg;
  • A 600kg Limousin bull sells for €2,460 or €4.10 per kilogram;
  • A Limousin bull weighing 595 kg sold for 2,800 euros, or 4.71 euros per kilogram;
  • A Charolais bull weighing 555 kg is sold at 2,360 or 4.25 euros per kilogram;
  • A Charolais bull weighing 530 kg sold for 2,380 euros, or 4.49 euros per kilogram.

One of the highest prices per head at the bull sale was €2,900, paid for a 620kg Charolais bull equating to €4.68 per kilogram.

A 500kg Limousin bull sold for €2,220 or €4.53 per kg, and two other Angus bulls averaging 578kg sold for €2,160 or €3.74 per head.

Sample prices of cow sales

At the heifer sale, one of the highest prices per kilo was €4.38/kg for a 480kg Limousin cow that achieved €2,100.

A 490kg Angus heifer sold for €2,060, or €4.20 per kilogram, and a 490kg Limousin cow sold at €2,060, or €4.20 per kilogram.

One of the highest prices per head at the cow auction was a 710kg Angus heifer which achieved €2,700 or €3.80 per kilogram.

Another 505kg Limousin heifer sold for €1,880 or €3.72/kg, and a pair of 400kg Angus heifers sold for €1,640 or €4.10/kg.

Easter Monday (April 6) will see Tuam Mart host its Bank Holiday Bonanza sale. The general cattle sale will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the weaner sale will begin at 2:00 p.m.
