com.MoonPay PayBox launched today– A payment vault that connects to Claude and ChatGPT and allows AI agents, software that autonomously completes tasks on your behalf, to actually spend money on your behalf.
The mechanics are fairly straightforward. The vault acts as a secure digital vault that stores cryptocurrency wallets and payment cards. You tell the chatbot what you want. The AI then prepares the transaction. You can approve it using a passkey (a secure digital key stored on your phone or device, such as Face ID for payments). Then the money moves.
“The card hid the money. The phone hid the card. So far, Claude and ChatGPT have been able to research investments, compare flight prices, and plan purchases, but they haven’t been able to complete them. You still have to open the browser, log in to the payment service, and make the actual transaction yourself. PayBox aims to fill this gap.
First integrations live at launch: restaurant reservations, flight reservations, and shopping across major online retailers. Users can also exchange tokens, bridge funds between blockchains, and route funds to DeFi protocols such as ghost.
PayBox supports Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible chains (Ethereum itself, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon) at launch. It also works with x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase and since donated to the Linux Foundation — now backed by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic — that allows AI agents to pay for any service designed to accept agent-initiated transactions.
PayBox didn’t come out of nowhere. MoonPay has been working toward this goal throughout most of 2026. The infrastructure under PayBox comes from Sodot, an Israeli key management startup MoonPay It was acquired for approximately $100 million In April, in an all-stock deal. The wallet keys are split using MPC – multi-party computation, which is a cryptographic technology where the private key is split into separate parts held by different parties, so no one person can access your funds alone. These fragments are stored in TEEs (Trusted Execution Environments – isolated areas in the hardware that protect sensitive data even from the server running the software).
According to the company’s launch announcement, “Wallet keys are split via MPC across hardware-isolated enclaves, so no device, session or party, no MoonPay, no AI agent, holds an entire key or can sign on its own.”
Card payments are routed through Visa’s proxy commerce protocol. This means the AI processes the payment without seeing your actual card number, reducing the risk of credentials being leaked and reused.
MoonPay frames PayBox as a solution to a structural problem plaguing existing products. “Existing products impose a trade-off between convenience and control: to allow an agent to transact independently, a user typically has to authorize them to hold funds directly, and trust one party, the platform, agent, or hosted wallet, to hold and move those funds securely,” the company said. “PayBox is designed so that no party, including MoonPay and the AI itself, can unilaterally access a user’s funds or credentials.”
