Cattle trading has strengthened in recent weeks at Roscommon Mart, with “renewed confidence” returning to the ring, according to market manager Tony Connery.
talking to Agriland At general market cattle sales, Connery said demand for stock cattle had improved after a quieter period earlier this year, with prices now topping the “€4/kg mark for quality stores”.
“The beef trade is probably struggling a little bit so far, but demand has increased over the last couple of weeks and we hope to see that continue through the end of the year,” he said.
The market manager also described the current sheep trade as “very strong”, with continued strong demand for both finished and stock lambs.
According to Connery, Roscommon Mart currently handles about 800 sheep each week.
“Front lambs weighing between 48 and 50kg charge between €200 and €210.
“Shop lambs have only just started to appear in the last couple of weeks and are averaging €145-€160, with ewe lambs in good demand.”

Connery noted that the market continues to enjoy strong support from both farmers and local buyers as it prepares for the busy fall season.
He commented: “There have been some difficult times over the years, but we are doing very well at the moment.
“We have a very good group of customers who keep coming back.
“We have now started our fall trade, and we have 25 pens of weaned bulls booked for Tuesday night, along with 10 pens of heifers as well.”
With more than half a century since its founding, Connery said Roscommon Mart hopes to “continue for another 67 years”.
