BankSouth is warning customers about fake text messages impersonating the bank’s fraud prevention department.

Many customers have reported receiving text messages designed to appear “very formal” and demanding immediate action that could lead to accounts being compromised.
Scammers seek to trick customers into handing over their actual account information or login credentials, which is a common scam.
BankSouth says the messages are not from the financial institution and advises customers to ignore them and contact the bank directly.
The phishing scam targets mobile phone users with urgent-looking banking alerts. Victims risk access to the account if they respond or click on the links.
The bank actively monitors and alerts the public to prevent losses of data or funds. Official communications from the bank do not use such tactics. Customers should check for any unexpected text messages by logging into their accounts or calling known numbers.
To avoid being scammed, the bank says, never reply to a text message, click on links or call the number in the message. The bank also says it will never ask for customers’ password, PIN, online banking credentials or security codes.
BankSouth, a community bank founded in Georgia, has $1.6 billion in assets under management.
