The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Information Network has suffered unauthorized access that could have exposed sensitive planning details for major events.
The platform serves as an important tool for federal, state, and local agencies to coordinate emergency responses and share intelligence.
The incident was the first I mentioned By Nextgov, which obtained a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
“DHS is aware of a recent cyber incident involving a specific, unclassified information-sharing environment. We immediately took action to isolate the affected systems, mitigate the vulnerability, and initiate a comprehensive forensic investigation. There is no indication that the classified networks were affected, and the system remains operational for our partners. As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot provide further operational details at this time.”
Democratic Senator Mark R. Warner, Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Issued Statement about the incident.
“I am deeply concerned by the recent revelation that the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) has been compromised. For more than two decades, the HSIN platform has been used by federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement partners, and the private sector, to share intelligence, plan, coordinate, and collaborate on incident and incident response…
The information in HSIN, although unclassified, is highly sensitive, and its disclosure threatens national security. DHS and DOJ must conduct a comprehensive investigation into who hacked the HSIN system, what the attackers accessed, and ensure that all DHS partners are provided with timely information and tools necessary to mitigate any risks associated with the breach.
Furthermore, DHS must take a serious look at how this happened and ensure that such a breach does not occur again. The homeland security community needs to trust that the information in the HSIN is secure, and the American public must be able to trust that the department responsible for America’s cybersecurity has its own internal system.
