Steyr launches a new concept of light armored tractors

Steyr joined forces with ballistics engineer Mehler Protection to design a lightly armored tractor.

While tractors and defense may seem an unlikely pairing, tractors can meet many of the needs of defense companies.

According to the two companies, “Modern operations increasingly require fast, all-terrain vehicles capable of operating multiple roles, from logistics to specialized engineering tasks such as mine clearance.

“At the same time, defense planners are under pressure to reduce the total cost of the mission, and deploy capable platforms at scale and speed from proven production lines rather than traditional expensive, low-volume specialized systems.”

The companies feel that modern tractors meet this need, and Steyr’s parent company CNH supports this collaboration, with the aim of exploring defense sector opportunities further in the future.

Steyr and Mehler Protection showcased their collaborative efforts to develop the armored tractor concept at Eurosatory 2026, one of the world’s largest international trade fairs dedicated to the defense and security sectors.

The concept is built around one of Steyr’s Terrus CVT tractors and will have access to the kinetic energy of Mehler Protection’s Multi-Role Armor Composite Components (M-RACC KE).

Dennis Weber, business development manager at Mehler Protection, described the project as “the complete militarization of a civilian tractor,” adding that the concept includes “everything needed to meet military standards.”

Protection specifications

The M-RACC KE is in line with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standardization agreement that defines protection levels for occupants of logistics vehicles and light armored military vehicles, STANAG 4569.

The agreement sets basic standards for vehicle armour, ensuring that troops are protected from kinetic energy threats (such as rifle and machine gun fire), artillery fragments, mine explosions or improvised explosive devices.

Mehler Protection claims that the M-RACC KE provides Level 1-3 protection for the STANAG 4569 against kinetic threats, while direct fire from small arms, secondary fragments and mines is Level 2.

The ballistics engineer describes his system as designed for situations where “reliable protection of personnel and critical assets is essential.”

It also described its cabin design as “fully protected” at STANAG 4569 2 ballistic protection level, providing a “high degree of protection against direct fire, fragmentation and mine threats.”

The company also stated that the two doors, sunroof and fireworks-editable rear window provide multiple escape routes in emergency situations.

According to the promotional video of the tractor concept, the machine supports complete cab replacement.

This is achieved by not having the cab fully integrated into the body as such, but instead being placed on top of it, and can be removed.

The video also points out bullet-resistant glass and mine threat protection built into the design.

In addition, the tractor platform layout allows for the support of a wide range of attachments.

Benefits of the model

Steyr is a reputed brand of agricultural machinery, mostly known for the build quality of its sturdy machines and the power that comes with them.

One of Steyr’s flagship models is a member of the Terrus CVT family – the Steyr 6340.

Boasting an impressive 340 hp and a top speed of 56 km/h, the 6340 is impressive across the board in terms of performance.

Despite being a heavy tractor at over 11.5 tonnes, it produces a scary amount of torque (1398Nm at 1400rpm).

Steyr systems were also well regarded for their precision farming despite simplicity inside the cabin.

In addition, a comfortable cabin is a priority for Steyr.

Overall, Steyr is a premium brand, and the companies have designed this concept to keep these key characteristics of Steyr at its centre.

Meaning of cooperation

Markus Müller, President of CNH EMEA, welcomed the opportunity to showcase this concept with Mehler Protection at Eurosatory.

“Our deep experience in manufacturing equipment designed to operate at scale in demanding applications positions Steyr as a strong partner for the defense sector,” he said.

“By combining Steyr’s engineering expertise with Mehler’s specialist knowledge, we are positioned to meet the very high standards of the sector.

We are pleased to showcase this pioneering innovation from Steyr at Eurosatory, where CNH is evaluating a potential entry into defense-related activities.”

Christian Waldeck, Managing Director of Mehler Protection, emphasized that Eurosatory partners bring together unique expertise in the defense and security sectors.

“We are able to offer the combination of innovation, protection and safety which is a must for these industries,” he said.

“Our exhibition at Eurosatory enables us to demonstrate the combination of a scalable platform, industrial expertise and proven protection/integration capabilities that offer a cohesive and modular overall concept for one of the most demanding sectors in the world.”

Mehler Protection and Steyr “will work together as European companies to develop and implement the required focus on creating reliable industrial value and strong partner networks within the EU,” Waldeck added.
