CNH invests €21 million in automated logistics and virtualization


Case and New Holland, CNH’s parent company, are introducing an “advanced virtualization ecosystem” and automated logistics warehouse at its research and development (R&D) center in San Matteo in Modena, Italy.

According to CNH, this double investment of €21 million will strengthen its core capabilities, accelerating product development through digital simulation.

CNH also believes it will improve supply chain execution through high-speed robots.

Markus Müller, Head of EMEA at CNH, explained: “In a challenging global market, speed and accuracy are crucial.

“At San Mateo, we combine advanced simulation with automated logistics to reduce development time, improve product quality, and ensure faster parts availability for our customers across Europe.”

CNH says the new simulation center establishes a “virtual-first methodology.”

This means it identifies flaws in machine design early in the product life cycle “accelerating time to market by more than 30%.”

The Dutch company described the project as “acting as an integrated digital twin.”

“This ecosystem reduces engineering risks, improves field verification, and reduces test emissions across three technology pillars.”

The three technological pillars are as follows:

  • Dynamic simulator – Driver-in-the-loop system on a 6-axis immersive motion platform to test complex vehicle behavior before physical production.
  • Multiple dyno test cell – A controlled environment that validates advanced powertrain systems and electrical devices against virtual models.
  • Advanced sensor test track – Highly repeatable performance measurement facility with full weather simulation to verify the accuracy of sensors and autonomous features.

CNH’s virtual R&D center is complemented by a state-of-the-art automated logistics centre.

This is powered by AutoStore’s advanced automated retrieval system, which CNH says ensures spare parts are available within 24 hours to more than 1,200 dealers and workshops around the world.

According to CNH, the facility offers “ultimate performance breakthroughs compared to traditional warehouses” thanks to:

  • speed: Retrieval time reduced from 15 minutes to less than 30 seconds, up to 550 parts per hour
  • efficiency: 70% higher storage density; 85% reduction in physical stress

This achievement reinforces CNH’s commitment to Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, often called the “Valley of Tractors.”

CNH attributes part of this development to its strategic academic and technical partnerships, in particular with the University of Bologna, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
