Liffey Meats is launching a sustainability plan for its beef farmer suppliers


Liffey Meats has announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at financially rewarding beef farmer suppliers for on-farm sustainability measures.

The new initiative will be led by Liffey Meats and is titled: “Positive Farming Programme”.

The beef processor described the Liffey Meats Positive Farming program as “a major sustainability initiative designed to support farmer suppliers in adopting practical measures that improve environmental performance while enhancing farm viability.”

The program will initially focus on employment From suckling to beef or from dairy calf to beef Farms, with participating farmers eligible for payments Up to €2,700 in 2026 Based on the program procedures provided.

A statement from Liffey Meats regarding its new initiative explained that sustainability “continues to grow in importance among customers and consumers.”

“The Positive Farming Program aligns with the evolving needs of the market and Liffey Meats’ commitment to working closely with customers and farmers to achieve continued positive impact across the value chain.”

The statement also said the program reflects Liffey Meats’ “long-term commitment to supporting Irish beef farmers through innovation, knowledge transfer and catalyzing measurable sustainability actions”.

Participating farmers will receive advisory support through Liffey Meats, including farm visits, knowledge transfer events and technical guidance focused on improving animal performance and overall farm performance to reduce emissions and further enhance sustainable practices on their farms.

Speaking about the launch of the programme, Francis Malone, CEO of Liffey Meats, said: “Irish farmers are already doing a great deal of positive work on sustainability, and this program aims to recognise, support and reward these efforts in a practical way.

“At Liffey Meats, we believe the future of Irish beef production lies in combining strong environmental performance with profitable and productive farming systems.

“The Positive Farming Program is designed to help farmers make tangible progress while strengthening the long-term resilience of their farms and our broader supply chain.”

The program will prioritize actions that can achieve the greatest impact, including:

  • smaller finishing cattle;
  • Improve fertilizer management;
  • Genetics.
  • Low emission slurry spread.
  • Water quality protection;
  • Promoting biodiversity.

From 2027 onwards, the program will evolve into an animal-based rewards model, whereby participating farmers will be eligible for a sustainability bonus of up to 20 cents per kg of finished livestock where program criteria are met.

“Sustainability must work for farmers as well as the environment,” Malone added.

“We want to play our part in supporting farmers through this transition by investing in knowledge, innovation and incentives that deliver real value at the farm level.”

The Positive Farming Program also aims to support wider knowledge sharing across the Liffey Meats supply base through open days, best practice events and ongoing farmer engagement.
