The national average price per liter of diesel in April 2026 was €2.17/litre, an increase of 45 cents/litre on the same period last year, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO).
National average prices for selected goods and services for April 2026 also show that petrol prices rose by 16 cents to €1.91 per litre.

Commenting on national average prices, CSO statistician Anthony Dawson noted that the price of sirloin steak per kilogram rose by €2.34 to €21.82/kg.

The average cost of two liters of whole milk fell by 8 cents to €2.38, while a pound of butter (454 grams) fell by 38 cents to €4.31. The average price of Irish cheddar cheese per kilogram fell by 12 cents.
The average price of 2.5 kg of potatoes fell by 21 cents to 3.62 euros.
In April 2026, the national average price of a pint of beer on licensed premises was €6.32, up 26 cents over the year, while the price of a pint of lager was €6.75, up 27 cents compared to April 2025.
The national average price of a 50-litre can of beer at €2.40 fell by 1 cent from April 2025, while the price of a 50-litre can of cider at €2.73 rose by 4 cents.
Consumer prices
The Central Bureau of Statistics also confirmed that the consumer price index rose by 3.7% between April 2025 and April 2026.
This was the highest annual inflation rate observed in the CPI since January 2024 when inflation reached 4.1%.
Excluding energy and unprocessed foods, the index rose 2.6% in the 12 months to April 2026.
The departments that saw the largest increases in the 12 months to April 2026 were education services (8.9%), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (8.1%) and clothing and footwear (7.9%).
It is estimated that food prices in April 2026 rose by 2% over the 12-month period, and rose by 0.4% compared to March 2025.
The Central Bureau of Statistics indicated that the collection of prices for the month of April 2026 took place between April 13 and 23, which means that some fuel prices were collected before the introduction of additional government measures regarding fuel costs.
